Dating to around 1820, this refined porcelain comport dish was produced by the distinguished Worcester manufactory of Flight, Barr
Barr. The company, active from 1807 until 1840, gained a reputation for its exquisitely decorated wares, often enriched with gilding and fine painting that appealed to aristocratic and royal clientele. Following its merger with Chamberlain’s Worcester in 1840, the celebrated name of Royal Worcester emerged.
Traditionally, comports were designed to present delicacies such as fruits, sweetmeats, or desserts, adding refinement and visual drama to the dining table. This example perfectly illustrates both the functional and decorative qualities of the form. The shaped bowl rises elegantly from a circular base, which is enhanced with fine gilt banding.
The interior is the true focal point: a gilded gadrooned rim encircles the dish, from which a seaweed-like gilt pattern flows gracefully toward the centre. At its heart, a hand-painted vignette portrays a serene river landscape framed by woodland, capturing the peaceful beauty of the English countryside.
On the underside, the piece bears the impressed Flight, Barr
Barr ‘FBB’ mark, along with the inscription ‘Moss Dale. Yorkshire,’ likely alluding to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, thought to be the subject of the painted scene.
Exemplifying the firm’s craftsmanship and artistic vision, this comport dish combines historical charm with enduring elegance.
