About the Item

Auguste Ledru (French, 1860-1902) Naïade Bronze Centerpiece circa 1895 Figural bronze Centerpiece Representing a nude woman resting on a rock and surmounting two trays designed as shells Signed "Ledru" Circa 1895 Some of his works exhibited in Orsay Paris Museum Auguste Isidore Ledru (1837-1918) was a French sculptor born in Reims, son of Pierre Jacques Ledru and Marie Madeleine Galetson. By marriage to Elisa Closier, he had at least five children: the eldest, Auguste (1860-1902), was an ornamental sculptor and friend of Rodin; Pierre (1862), Léon (1866), Charles (1868), who did not survive, and Alice Augustine Ledru (1870). Alice Augustine Ledru was the wife of René Lalique, a genius artist who left his mark on Art Nouveau with her jewelry and Art Deco with her glass creations. With them, she had a daughter, Suzanne Lalique. After Alice Ledru's early death in 1909, René Lalique encouraged his daughter Suzanne to express her talents as a designer. He regularly calls upon her for her creativity and judgment. The period is fruitful: Suzanne designs bottles and powder boxes for the House of Lalique, created for the Sèvres factory, both alone and in collaboration with her father. In 1913, she exhibits watercolors for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, mo-dels for prints on fabrics. Taken in by Louise and Eugène Morand, future director of the École nationale des Arts décoratifs, she grew up in a quasi-family environment alongside Paul Morand and Jean Giraudoux. Eugène Morand introduced her to oil painting. Giraudoux, for his part, introduced her to the works of Manet, with his blacks and grays, which she would exploit with virtuosity in her decorative compositions and, later, in her paintings. Through her marriage to Paul Burty Havilland in 1917, Suzanne discovered another family of artists. Her husband was a photographer; her brother-in-law, Franck Burty Havilland, a painter and friend of Picasso; and her father-in-law, Charles Edward Haviland, a porcelain manufacturer. But it was for the Théodore Haviland factory, run by her husband's cousin, that Suzanne created her dinner services from 1925 onward.
