About the Item
Antique English Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain Goblet
Grisaille Painting by Humphrey Chamberlain, after Angelica Kauffman’s “Design”
Circa 1800–1815
Dimensions: 7 in. high × 6¼ in. wide (17.78 × 15.88 cm)
This exceptional large porcelain goblet from Chamberlain Worcester exemplifies the refined artistry and intellectual ambition of early 19th-century English ceramics. At its heart is a finely executed en grisaille panel by Humphrey Chamberlain, inspired by Angelica Kauffman’s allegorical painting of Design—one of four female personifications of the "Elements of Art" commissioned by the Royal Academy in 1778 for the ceiling of its Council Chamber at Somerset House.
Kauffman’s Design depicts a classical female figure draped in white and pale red with a purple mantle, seated beside Roman columns and sketching the Belvedere Torso—an antique fragment of a male nude celebrated for its expressive musculature. Though the original resides in the Vatican Museum, a cast was held by the Royal Academy for student instruction, underscoring the pedagogical role of classical sculpture in academic training. Chamberlain’s rendering pays homage to this lineage, translating Kauffman’s neoclassical vision into the monochrome subtlety of grisaille.
The goblet’s form and decoration reflect the Regency taste for opulence and classical revival. A wide gilt band encircles the rim, bordered below by a faux bois motif. Beneath this, a bracelet-like frieze of diamond shapes—yellow-centered and linked by white dots—evokes jewelry design. Alternating floral roundels, each centered with a rose and framed by faux bois, are interspersed with yellow diamonds and pendant gilt swags. The goblet’s body is scattered with stylized red blossoms and gilt foliage, creating a lively surface rhythm.
From the flared hollow foot, gilt and yellow sunbursts rise upward, anchoring the composition. The foot itself is encircled by bands of ochre and yellow, with central gilt reeding punctuated by tiny green dots—a testament to the meticulous hand-painting and layered ornamentation characteristic of Chamberlain Worcester’s finest output.
This goblet stands not only as a decorative object but as a vessel of artistic dialogue—bridging classical antiquity, Enlightenment aesthetics, and the technical virtuosity of English porcelain.
