About the Item

Chinese Export Porcelain Armorial Tankard, Mosey with Pulleyne in Prentice, Circa 1755. This Chinese Export armorial tankard is a fascinating piece of social and ceramic history, specifically commissioned to celebrate a marriage between two prominent English families. This porcelain tankard, made for the British market in Jingdezhen, China, is a wonderful example of custom-ordered armorial ware. Its primary decoration is an unusually large and detailed coat of arms, displayed prominently alongside a large crest. This combination of both heraldic elements on a single piece is a rare feature. The rim is elegantly finished with a gilt chain band, and the sides are further embellished with vibrant famille rose floral sprays, showcasing the rich color palette popular in the mid-18th century. The tankard's sturdy, cylindrical form is distinctly English, intended for drinking ale or cider. Armorial porcelain was the ultimate status symbol for wealthy European families in the 18th century. Coats of arms, meticulously drawn on paper or vellum, were sent on the long sea voyage to Canton (modern Guangzhou), where Chinese merchants would commission artisans to hand-paint the intricate designs onto porcelain forms. This tankard is a direct link to a specific historical event: the marriage of Reverend Thomas Mosley of Yorkshire to Frances Pulleyne, the heiress of Burley Hall, on March 6, 1752. The date of the tankard, circa 1755, places its commission shortly after their union, likely to commemorate the event. The heraldry, expertly identified by the renowned scholar David Sanctuary Howard, shows the arms of Mosley (a chevron between three silver pickaxes on a black field) combined with those of Pulleyne. The Mosley family was a significant one, with three branches having been granted baronetcies over the centuries. This piece was not just a drinking vessel; it was a statement of lineage, alliance, and social standing, blending English aristocratic tradition with the exotic luxury of Chinese craftsmanship. Dimensions: 5 inches high x 5 3/4 inches wide x 3 1/2 inch diameter (12.7 cm×14.61 cm×8.89 cm). Reference: David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Volume I, Page 549, (Q4).
