About the Item

Chinese Export Porcelain: Armorial Tankard (Circa 1780) Item: Chinese Export Porcelain Armorial Tankard. Date: Circa 1780, Qing Dynasty (Qianlong Period). Dimensions: 5 1/4 in. H x 6 in. W x 4 1/4 in. D (13.34 cm H x 15.24 cm W x 10.80 cm D). This large cylindrical tankard, custom-commissioned for a high-status Western client, tapers toward the foot. The decoration is centered by a meticulously rendered family coat of arms painted in vibrant enamels, signifying a bespoke luxury order. The body is ornamented with detailed decorative bands: The rim features a wide, richly gilt Rococo band overlaid with scrollwork and Famille Rose floral details. The sides display a large gray wash cornucopia overflowing with colorful floral arrangements. The foot is encircled by a gilt Greek key border set against an iron-red ground. The tankard is a high-quality example of custom-ordered 18th-century trade ceramics. Historical Context: Bespoke Trade Ceramics This armorial tankard is a direct product of the global Chinese Export porcelain trade at its zenith in the late 18th century. Wealthy elites across Europe and America commissioned large dinner and tea services from the kilns of Jingdezhen, China, requesting the inclusion of their personal or family coats of arms (heraldry). The custom-order process was complex: Patrons supplied detailed sketches of their heraldry to merchants, who forwarded them to the Canton (Guangzhou) workshops. Chinese artists then executed the precise European designs using the fashionable and bright Famille Rose opaque enamels, a style highly desired by Western markets. Owning such armorial porcelain was the definitive expression of elite status, serving as both luxury tableware and a tangible display of wealth and successful participation in international commerce. The object’s decoration—which merges the formal symmetry of European heraldry with Rococo scrolling—represents a unique convergence of Chinese artistry and Western consumer demand. References Provenance: A Private Georgia Collection; Sarah Potter Conover, Inc. General Context: The production and export of armorial porcelain peaked during the Qianlong period (1736–1795).
