About the Item
This is a fine example of an English George III period, Coalport Desert Plate, hand painted in pattern 1949 and dating from the early 19th century, circa 1810.
The Plate is well potted on a low foot with a wavy rim.
It is beautifully hand decorated in Coalport's Chinoiserie pattern 1949 which is a very similar pattern to Spode's pattern 1956. The decoration depicts a pagoda in the central section with flowering trees around it. The cavetto has a three section border with three oval panels, each having a stylised Chinese house scene , all surrounded by colourful blossoms and leaves set against a cobalt blue ground. The plate has superb rich enameling with much hand gilding in Gold.
Heavily gilded porcelains of this period were called "candlelight wares" because of the brilliance of there gilding.
The plate has the pattern number 1949 hand painted in red by the inner foot rim.
