About the Item

Veiled Beauty: Fornasetti "Tema e Variazioni" Plate, Hands (Motiv 16) This visually arresting plate is a powerful example from Piero Fornasetti's (1913–1988) celebrated Themes Variations (Tema e Variazioni) series. Produced by the Rosenthal Factory in the 1980s, this specific piece, Motiv Number 16, is known as "Hands," and masterfully blends figuration, graphic art, and surrealist mystique. Design and Allusion The plate centers on the face of Fornasetti's muse, the 19th-century opera singer Lina Cavalieri. Here, her portrait is partially obscured by a pair of hands held horizontally across her eyes and mouth. The hands are depicted in a striking graphic style, perhaps suggesting fishnet gloves or a patterned veil, intensifying the sense of mystery and artifice. The composition—which leaves only a single, expressive eye visible—is a classic Surrealist maneuver, turning the plate into a scene of concealment and partial revelation. This design perfectly encapsulates the philosophy of the Tema e Variazioni series. Fornasetti was deeply fascinated by Cavalieri's face, viewing it as an "archetype" upon which he created over 350 graphic variations. This motif, by adding hands, explores themes of modesty, performance, identity, and the enigmatic quality of the feminine ideal. Historical Context This plate is a highly collectible artifact of the 1980s collaboration between the Fornasetti studio and Rosenthal, Germany. This partnership was instrumental in reviving and internationalizing Fornasetti's visual lexicon in the latter 20th century. The gold rim and flawless transfer print showcase the quality of the Rosenthal porcelain, which served as the perfect medium for Fornasetti's refined black-and-white graphic designs. Dimensions: Diameter: 9 1/4 inches (23.50cm). Marking: The reverse is authenticated with a printed mark in white on a black circle: Rosenthal. Classic/Germany/ followed by the central Fornasetti hand and brush logo and the inscription Fornasetti (with trademark symbol)/ Dekor/ Teme E Variazioni/ Motiv 16. Reference Notes Catalogue Raisonné: The guiding principle behind the endless variations is cited as Fornasetti's ceaseless creativity and belief that: "The archetypal classic female features, and enigmatic expression of Lina Cavalieri became Fornasetti's most frequently used template and upon which he based more than 350 variations." Production: The markings confirm the 1980s Rosenthal Factory production, a key period for the revival of the Fornasetti brand's commercial success. Motif Origin: The entire series is founded on the face of operatic soprano Lina Cavalieri, whom Fornasetti saw as an inexhaustible "quintessentially beautiful and classic image." (Ref: NY10721-ikrr)
