About the Item

This is a highly collectable, hand-painted porcelain coffee can (cup) , made by Derby porcelain Co., England in the George III period, circa 1810. The coffee can is straight sided and nominally 2.65 inches square excluding the handle. The handle is Derby's rare ear shaped handle. The can is beautifully hand-painted with an intricate Acanthus - Imari, hand gilded, oriental design in colours of cobalt blue and burnt orange, all in varying shades and which continues all around the can. The level of hand painted detail is particularly good. The hand gilding continues around the outer part of the handle. A Derby coffee can of similar age and with an ear shaped handle is shown on page 284 of the reference book; Derby Porcelain by John Twitchett, published by the Antique Collectors' Club. The can has the hand painted Derby crown mark to the base with the crossed batons, dots and "D” below, with "41" to the base rim all hand painted in iron red. It also has hand painted double blue lines to the outer base rim, the "41" and these blue lines probably being the painter and gilders mark. Overall a beautiful hand painted Derby Coffee Can from the English George 111rd period.

This is a good quality porcelain coffee can that we attribute to Spode of Staffordshire, England, made during the very early 19th century, George 111rd period, circa 1810. The coffee can is nominally parallel, with a loop handle having one lower kink, characteristic of the Spode handle. It has a fairly deep foot recess with obtuse corners and is unmarked to the base.
