About the Item
A very rare and stunning German Hausmalerei (home painted) porcelain dish and cover hand-painted with insects and flowers dating from the 18th century.
Hausmalerei refers to blank pieces of porcelain and pottery which were painted by artists at home. These were often created to impress the great porcelain makers of their talent in the hope of securing work as artists at the various makers. Having shared this incredible piece with a number of experts it has certainly created debate but the consensus, based on the quality of the work is that the piece was painted for presentation to Meissen, and probably a Meissen blank.
The porcelain pedestal dish stands raised on three finely detailed lion paw feet. The bowl is of wide round shape and is white glazed with an unglazed top edge and has a domed cover which fits neatly and slightly overhangs the edge, it too with an unglazed inner rim. The cover raises gradually to a small flat round platform mounted with a central finial. The body of the bowl has been exquisitely hand painted with various insects and flowers to the cover and outer bowl with further floral designs painted to the inner bowl. The lion paw feet have molded detail which has been puce painted around where they connect to the body of the bowl and the base has a very elaborate and finely puce painted house and tower landscape to the base. It is believed that the variety of themes painted on the bowl were to provide evidence of the diverse ability of the artist painting the piece.
Provenance: Acquired from a major collection back in the 1990’s through the UK Art Market. A reluctant sale!
Condition: There is some minor professional restoration to the finial and a small unpainted section which has been invisibly and professionally reattached to the rim of the cover. These are mentioned for absolute accuracy only.
