About the Item
The antique set of creamer and sugar bowl with lid was created by Charles Field Haviland and hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio. The unusual, hand to find blanks feature squared forms with fluted scalloped rims and sculptural detailed handles. The artist painted different landscapes of lakes or large rivers, surrounded by hills with lush vegetation; some of the landscapes include boats on the water. The highly detailed, beautifully executed landscapes are prominently placed on the side of the pieces; the sugar bowl lid features 4 small triandular vignettes. The landscape motifs are framed with gold trim, with crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain serving as a matting. The rims and the handle are accented with gold trim.
The pieces are marked with the green underglaze CFH marks, dating to 1868-1876, and overglaze artists initials in gold. The set is in very good antique condition with minimal wear on gold that is appropriate to its age. We are offering a cup and saucer set, decorated by the same artist with the landscape views in the same style and marked with the green underglaze CFH/GDM marks, dating to 1882-1891, that is most possibly a part of the same service, in a separate listing. The later marks on the cup and saucer set suggest that while the blanks were made before 1876, the full service was probably decorated in early 1880s.
The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china, known as blanks, was frequently chosen by those firms due to its high quality. As with the Limoges factories, the major artists often moved from company to company, and some of the artists were women; china decoration started to be considered a respectable occupation for a woman, creating an additional source of income for those who needed it and had appropriate skills.
The elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and charming hand painted decoration will make the set a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Transitional, Modern Country, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

The antique set of cup and saucer was created by Charles Field Haviland and hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio. The rare, hand to find blank features a streamlined flat cup form with a sculptural detailed handle. The artist painted 3 different landscapes of lakes or large rivers, surrounded by hills with lush vegetation; 2 of the landscapes include small boats on the water. The highly detailed, beautifully executed landscapes are prominently placed on the bottom and the side of the cup and in the center of the saucer and framed with gold trim, with crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain serving as a matting. The rims and the handle are accented with gold trim.

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Pair of Porcelain Cups
Saucers, France 1894-1931
By Haviland
Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 2 demitasse cups and 2 saucers was made by Haviland
Cie in Limoges, France. The Art Deco style form of a footed cups, with 3 small ball feet, is rather rare and hard to find, especially in coffee or demitasse size. In this set the pieces were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Victorian style motif of pink English roses. Calm light pink and green colors are accentuated by bright gold rims and gold trim on handles and ball feet; crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain showcases the soft, delicate decor without overpowering it.
The pieces are marked with green underglaze manufacturer mark Haviland France that dates to 1894-1931. The set is in very good antique condition with minimal wear on gold that is appropriate to its age.
