About the Item

Antique hand painted and hand decorated small tureen by Haviland in the Fleurs Parisiennes pattern on Cannele blank measures 3.1" and 8.5" with 5.4" opening. The back-marks on the bottom are H&C*/Depose underglaze mark, dating back to 1887, and the circular Haviland Limoges decorator/overglaze mark (mark g, according to Haviland's Collectors International Foundation reference sheet) in brown (color indicates premium decor pieces on Haviland porcelain made in that period), dating back to 1879-1889. Cannele blank ("fluted"), influenced by traditional Japanese bowl shape called "kaki" or "chrysanthemum", was one of the new blanks created in 1880-1890s by Haviland's artists at the peak of Japonisme movement, after European artists and artisans become exposed to Japanese art. Cannele was hugely popular at the time and won the Grand Prix of 1889 Paris's World Fair. The Fleurs Parisiennes is one of the less common Haviland patterns; originally it was created in 1886 by one of Haviland's Auteil Studio painters, Girardin, for service commissioned by King Luis I of Portugal. According to multiple sources, the service is still kept in the Palacio d'Ajuda in Lisbon. The pattern consists of 12 different multifloral designs done in style of Impressionism. As it was common, the pattern was later reused commercially, so it can be found on other pieces apart from the royal service. One the tureen's cover lid one of the flower designs was placed, as a lithographic transfer, on hand painted background of blue sky and rose cream-colored clouds (possibly indicating sunset) and hand decorated with raised off-white enamel accents to create 3d effect and add depth and brilliance on flower petals and leaves. Such hand detailing was primarily used on premium, more expensive porcelain, made by more skilled artisans at the Haviland's workshop, as opposed to pieces decorated by hand-placed transfers only. The main decor is framed by a solid 1" border in sophisticated bright pink color that is outlined with brushed gold accents. The body of the tureen is decorated in the same pink color with brushed gold accents, handles are done in solid gold, and the inside of the tureen is left undecorated aside from the brown decorator mark on the inside of the tureen's cover. The tureen will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and will complement various tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Collected, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Transitional, or Contemporary.
