About the Item

Haviland Limoges oval bowl features Marseille (or Schleiger 9) shape; it is decorated with elaborate floral motifs in blue, pink, light green, and mocha brown colors on both inner and outer surfaces. The bowl has complicated asymmetrical shape with elaborate textured details on both rim and the handle. Marseille shape was introduced in late 1880s and quickly become one of the most popular lines of Haviland china in 1890s. In factory catalogues this piece is often listed as a vegetable server; in contemporary tablescape it can be used as a salad, fruit, or chips bowl or a side dish serving bowl. The bowl is marked with underglaze green factory mark "H&C* L France", dating to 1888-1886, and red overglaze decorator mark "Haviland C* Pour T.M. James Sons Kansas City Mo."; the decorator mark indicates that the bowl was specifically created for this Kansas City importer of fine French dinnerware. Thomas Martin James, one of the Kansas City oldest citizens, moved to Kansas City, then known as Westport Landing, in 1851; in 1958 he founded T. M. James Co., an upscale wholesale and retail store, where he sold Queen's Ware, fine English china, such as Wedgwood, Minton, and Spode, French Limoges porcelain, fine glass and crystal, and art objects. After his death, his two sons continued to operate the company, until the store was sold to Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards. The elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and charming decoration will make the bowl a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Transitional, Modern Country, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.
