About the Item

Antique porcelain serving or salad bowl features sculptural squared form with rounded scalloped corners. The bowl is hand decorated with an early variation of the classic Haviland "Flowers and butterflies" patterns in delicate blue, coral, light yellow, and brown palette. The sides of the bowl are decorated with different flower motifs, and the inside surfaces showcase the arrangement of large and small floral motifs on the side and two corners of the bowl. The ornamental ribbon shaped handles are accentuated with gold lattice details, and the sculpted floral accents below the nadles are hand-painted with gold trim. On the earlier decorations the decals were used to outline the flowers or other elements, and the colors were added by hand-painting over the outlines.Sometimes the decor included the enamel accents added after the pieces were hand-painted; this bowl has small white enamel accents on flowers and branches on both inner and outer surfaces, adding texture and volume to the composition. The bowl is marked on the bottom with green underglaze CFH/GDM mark, that was in use from 1882 to 1891. It is in very good antique condition with age-appropriate slight wear on gold; the convenient shape allows it to be used not only as a serving piece, but also as a fruit display bowl or a decor piece. The elegant, sculptural form, high quality craftsmanship, and colorful, highly detailed decoration will make the bowl a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, French Country, Transitional, Modern Country, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.

The bowl is marked with underglaze green factory mark "H&C* L France", dating to 1888-1886, and red overglaze decorator mark "Haviland C* Pour T.M. James Sons Kansas City Mo."; the decorator mark indicates that the bowl was specifically created for this Kansas City importer of fine French dinnerware...
