About the Item
The antique fine porcelain set of covered sugar bowl and creamer or syrup pitcher is decorated with multifloral motifs in Old Blackberry pattern; the sugar bowl has the unusual boat-shaped Osiers blank, and the pitcher features rope-shaped handle. The textured elements on the bowl and the pitcher are accentuated with gold.
In 1870s and 1880s artists at Haviland's Auteuil studio created several multifloral patterns, each of which consisted of a suite of several major pattern units. Old Blackberry (or Schleiger #1155), one of such patterns dating to early 1880s or late 1870s, contains 12 major units. The elaborate series of transfer designs brings forward the Japanisme inspired principles, used by Felix Bracquemond in creation of renowned Rousseau service, within the European art tradition. Bold, large flowers, leaves, and fruits, looking similar to European botanical prints, are done in strong colors, showing up dramatically against the brilliant white of the porcelain. The color schemes are quite different from the nature-inspired prints, with brown, umber, ochre yellow, sienna, blue, grey, and muted green colors used in various combinations. The colors were applied without distinction to the whole range of motifs, such as honeysuckle, ranunculus, cabbage rose, carnation, rambler rose, anemone, daisy, black-eyed Susan, flowering peach, and even blackberry branches with flowers and fruit.
With 12 major units and numerous smaller motifs, the variations in decor allowed the whole service to be decorated within the chosen color scheme, but each piece of the service would have been different; for example, each plate might be decorated with different major flower group and complemented by a few smaller flower or foliage snippets, placed across the plate in spontaneous manner, inspired by Japanese drawings and contemporaneous Japanism style. Even if major flower group will be duplicated at another plate, the placement of element would be different; the decorators were encouraged to cut and organize the paper-printed lithographic transfers (as a part of a decoration process, encouraged by the master-printmaker Bracquemond) over the surfaces of porcelain blancs in a manner that was directly influenced by compositional principles of Japanese prints, such as asymmetrical composition, visual balance, and the use of negative space. The Auteuil Studio, opened in 1872, and its artists, including Bracquemond, Dammouse, Pallandre, and Bellet, created some of the most exquisite floral pattern in the history of Haviland company, with the adaptation of Japanese designs into traditional Western style decor and interpreting the Impressionist art of the period through the their designs.
The pitcher is marked with underglaze green factory mark "H&C*/L", dating to 1876-1889, and blue overglaze decorator "donut" mark "Haviland
C* Limoges", used in 1879-1889; the sugar bowl is marked with the same underglaze mark, red overglaze decorator mark "Haviland
C* Limoges", dating to 1876-1878 and 1889-1931, and handwritten red overglaze decor number. Overall, the marks date the set to 1889. This set does not seem to be created for a specific distributor or a store.
We are offering a pair of large serving bowls in Old Blackberry pattern in a separate listing.
The elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and striking decoration will make the set a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Transitional, Modern Country, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.

Félix Bracquemond
Fe´lix Bracquemond was born in Paris. He was trained in early youth as a trade lithographer, until Guichard, a pupil of Ingres, took him to his studio. His portrait of his grandmother, painted by him at the age of nineteen, attracted The´ophile Gautier's attention at the Salon. He applied himself to engraving and etching about 1853, and played a leading and brilliant part in the revival of the etcher's art in France. Altogether he produced over eight hundred plates, comprising portraits, landscapes, scenes of contemporary life, and bird-studies, besides numerous interpretations of other artist's paintings, especially those of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, Gustave Moreau and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. After having been attached to the Se`vres porcelain factory in 1870, he accepted a post as art manager of the Paris atelier of the firm of Haviland of Limoges. He was connected by a link of firm friendship with E´douard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and all the other fighters in the impressionist cause, and received all the honors that await the successful artist in France, including the grade of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1889. Bracquemond was a prominent figure in artistic and literary circles in the second half of the 19th century. He was close to writers such as Edmond de Goncourt and critic Gustave Geffroy, and numbered among his friends Millet and Corot, Henri Fantin-Latour, Degas and the Impressionist circle, and Auguste Rodin. He was one of the more prolific printmakers of his time and he was awarded the grande medaille d'honneur at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. He was also a painter, ceramist, and an innovator in decorative arts. Gabriel Weisberg called him the "molder of artistic taste in his time". Indeed, it was he who recognised the beauty of the Hokusai woodcuts used as packing around a shipment of Japanese china, a discovery which helped change the look of late 19th-century art. He married French Impressionist artist Marie Bracquemond in 1869. He died in Se`vres.
