About the Item
Antique set of 2 square and one round porcelain plates was created by Charles Field Haviland in late 19th century as a part of a big service; the game bird decor indicates that the plates would be used for the wild birds or venison course. With the dinner considered an important part of social life, there could be up to 15 courses for dinner with up to 65 pieces of china and 10-15 pieces of silverware per setting; as hunting was regarded as a great sport, wild game was served as a separate course with special plates used specifically for that purpose.
This particular set features various game birds framed in window-like rectangle with a view of a country landscape; the subdued brown palette of the landscapes with large bodies of water surrounded by trees suggests autumn hunts. The rims of the plates are decorated with wide cobalt blue bands, usually done underglaze in Feu de Four technique (referred to as Bleu de Four for cobalt pieces) that was the most expensive one, as it involved multiple decoration steps with additional firings. The gold trim and enamel accents were placed over the glaze in a separate firing; the contrast between deep, jewel-toned cobalt background and bright gold pattern adds visual interest to the pieces. The central game bird motif is shown in Haviland China: The Age of Elegance by Nora Travis on p. 126.
The ornate, highly detailed gold motifs of flowering branches with tone-on-tone gold and hand-placed white enamel accents on flowers suggest Arts and Crafts style influence on traditional Victorian decor of the service.
The plates are marked with underglaze green factory mark "CFH/GDM", dating to 1882-1891, and blue overglaze decorator "donut" mark "Ch. Field Haviland Limoges", used from 1862 to present; overall, the marks date the set to 1882-1891. This set does not seem to be created for a specific distributor or a store.
The elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and striking decoration will make the set a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Transitional, Modern Country, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Art Deco Porcelain Plates Water Lilies

Set of 4 unique, antique plates was made by Haviland
Cie in Limoges, France. The plates were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Art Deco motif of five water lilies on pale blue background. Calm blue and green colors are accentuated by bright yellow centers of the flowers and the gold rims.
The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...
