About the Item
Hortense Mattice Gordon R.C.A. (Canadian 1887-1961) - Fine and rare antique ceramic cabinet bowl - hand painted in the Art Nouveau style on an imported blank - featuring a display of raspberries and blackberries with flowers and leaves - gilded edge - signed and dated by the artist on the back - Canada - circa 1910.
Excellent antique condition - minor hairline crack (as photographed) - no loss - no restoration - minor scuffs
rubbing to the gilded edge - minimal signs of age and use.
Size/dimensions - 9 1/2" (24 cm) diameter x 2" (5 cm) deep.
Special Note - Hortense Mattice was a gifted artist from an early age - she spent a number of years with relatives in Chatham, Ontario living on a fruit farm (note the subject matter of the bowl) from 1910 to 1918 - while in Chatham she turned painting on imported china blanks into a business where she sold unique items from her studio and gave art lessons to locals as well - originally from Hamilton, she returned to teach art as an assistant to John Gordon at Hamilton Technical School, whom she later married - she was a member of the Painters Eleven later on in her career - this bowl is from a Chatham estate where the contents of the home had been untouched for more than fifty years - rare early work from a well collected Canadian artist.
