About the Item

Walking stick with porcelain knob attributed to Franz Anton Bustelli, Nymphenburg porcelain. A charming porcelain representation of a bearded man, braided hair and jaunty black cap slightly askew. The deep base is decorated with floral festoons and imprinted with the Nymphenburg shield mark. Among the finely detailed characters of Nymphenburg's dramatis personae, this one appears to resemble the factory's "Scaramouche", a clown character drawn from the Commedia dell'arte tradition of traveling theatrical entertainments. Provenance: Christie's London, South Kensington, 19 July 2012, auction 4062, lot no. 359, collection of Sandro and Lidia Orsi, Ca' Mera, Varese and property of the villa of an aristocratic Lombard family. Malacca wood cane. Nymphenburg Munich, Germany, circa 1755-1760.
