About the Item

The levade (French 'se lever' = to rise) is an exercise in classical horsemanship in which the horse shifts its weight onto its bent hind legs, raises its torso at an angle of less than 45° to the ground and pulls its front legs up to its body. If the angle is greater, it is called a pesade. The exercise has its roots in the ancient art of cavalry, where an agile and collected horse was an advantage. Today, it is one of the highest schools of horsemanship and is a demanding lesson that requires precision and a strong bond between horse and rider. The schools of horsemanship above the ground are divided into elevations (levade and pesade) and school jumps (croupade, ballotade, capriole, Viennese courbette). The levade is first taught in hand before being performed under the rider. It is developed from the piaffe, in which the horse is already strongly collected. The lesson should be ended by slowly lowering the horse. At the Spanish Riding School, the levade is also used as preparation for school jumps. The rider is dressed in the traditional costume of the Spanish Riding School, consisting of a black two-pointed hat, red tailcoat with gold epaulettes and buttons, and white buckskin trousers. It is accompanied by black leather gauntlet boots, matching spurs and white suede gloves. On oval, slightly curved earth base, with the inscriptions 'Levade-Spanish Riding School' and 'Hofburg Vienna' on the long sides. The model was created by Prof. Albin Doebrich circa 1925 Made 2nd half of 2oth century White porcelain, painted, glossy finish, gilding Measures: Height: 23,5 cm / 9.25 in Width: 21,5 cm / 8.46 in Depth: 10,5 cm / 4.13 in Marks: Underglaze blue shield mark with crown and 'Wien'/Vienna Press marks 'MADE IN AUSTRIA' + 'U' Decoration mark in red 'AUGARTEN WIEN AUSTRIA', used from 1945 (after WWII) Model number 1591 Painter's number 89 Condition: Very good Current sales price at Augarten Vienna ca.
