About the Item

Finest Meissen Porcelain Figurine: Dancer standing on one leg in a white Bajazzo suit with blue tassels, wearing the characteristic cap with an extra-long visor and cock feathers sticking out far to the rear, raising his right leg and turning while looking at a grotesque mask. The figure is supported from behind by a stylised plant and stands on a white, stepped oval base. Designed by Paul SCHEURICH (1883-1945) who was painter, sculptor, graphic artist, drawer and stage designer. He worked for Meissen manufactory from 1913 to 1936 and belonged to one of most important porcelain designers of the first half of the 20th century. ON THE DESIGN: Scheurich drew inspiration for his dancer, designed between 1931 and 1933, from both a graphic template from Jacques Callot's 'Balli di Sfessania' and Jacques Offenbach's opera “The Tales of Hoffmann”, based on the stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann.
