Meissen lovely pair of figurines: Day and night Day: model number l 134 / former's nr. 137 Measures: Height 20.47 inches (52 cm) Night: model number l 135 / former's number 111 / painter's nr. 57 Height: 20.47 inches (52 cm) Manufactory: Meissen Hallmarked: Blue Meissen Sword Mark with pommels on hilts - underglazed First quality Dating: fourth quarter of 19th century / made circa 1877-1880 Material: porcelain, glossy finish, multicolored painted Technique: handmade porcelain Style: Neo-Rococo Modelled by: Heinrich Schwabe (1847-1924) / models L 134 L 135 created 1877-80. Heinrich Schwabe was sculptor / he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Nuremberg / Germany. He was Professor in Nuremberg during the years 1875-1907. Until the year 1899 the Meissen manufactory acquired 48 models having been created by Schwabe. Detailed description: Allegory of the day The figurine is floating in the air / the cherub holds a rose flower's blossom in raised left hand as well as it seizes a burning torch - symbol of sun - by the right hand / a cloth is laid on the figurine's nude body, partially covering it: The garment seems to be blown by the wind ... additionally, there are rays of sun visible in the cheerub's hair: It is a gorgeous day figurine, indeed! Allegory of night The cherub's nude figurine is attached to a golden hemisphere, too. A mantle shaded midnight blue partially covers the cherub's figurine: Its head is crowned by a golden coronet of stars, being a wonderful hint to night ... additionally, an owl - a nocturnal species - is visible next to the cherub's feet.
