About the Item

Very rare Meissen allegorical group of the 19th century: Ceres, the Roman goddess of the earth (Greek: Demeter), seated beneath a group of trees, covered only by a cloth, presenting a large cornucopia filled with a variety of fruits on her lap, accompanied by two cupids engaged in farming, one breaking up the topsoil with a spade, the other harvesting the fruit, in front of them a chicken pecking at grains, and beside the goddess a globe of earth serving as her support. The group stands on a flat oval base with a gold rim. Designer: JOHANN JOACHIM KÄNDLER (1706 - 1775) chief sculptor at the Meissen manufactory from 1742 to 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer) , Gallant Figurines, etc. Design of model 832 in 1747.
