About the Item

Meissen Porcelain Monkey Musician Figurine. The Meissen porcelain figurine represents a violinist monkey from the celebrated “Monkey Band” series, conceived as part of the Affenkapelle group. The figure depicts a monkey standing upright, dressed in 18th-century attire consisting of a lilac coat with gilt buttons, a patterned waistcoat of turquoise and red, and green breeches. The monkey wears a cream-colored hat trimmed with yellow and blue and is shown holding a violin under its chin with a bow in hand. The surface displays vivid hand-painted detailing, including the textured fur, the folds of the costume, and the subtle shading of the porcelain. The figure stands on a circular, scrolled base enriched with gilt detailing and small applied flowers. The crossed swords mark appears in underglaze blue to the rear of the base, denoting Meissen porcelain. This figurine was modeled by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Peter Reinicke, leading sculptors at the Meissen factory in the mid-18th century. Their collaboration produced a series of monkey musicians that humorously imitated human musicians and courtiers, known as singerie figures. Each member of the ensemble plays a different instrument or assumes a role within a courtly orchestra, the violinist being among the most recognizable. The Meissen porcelain factory, under Kaendler’s direction beginning in 1733, became known for its elaborate sculptural figures and playful compositions. The “Monkey Band” was first designed in 1753 and later reissued in the early 1760s due to its popularity. The violinist figure, like the others in the set, combines detailed modeling with polychrome decoration, illustrating the technical precision and characteristic humor associated with Meissen’s production during this period.
