About the Item

A rare and stunning pair German porcelain figures holding birds attributed to Johann Joachim Kändler (German 1706 – 1775) for world renowned makers Meissen and dating from the 19th century. Johann Joachim Kändler joined Meissen in 1731 and was a major innovator in European porcelain sculpture. He is considered to have helped Meissen establish itself as the world leading producer of porcelain figures with many of the designs created by Kändler continuing in production well after his death at Meissen in 1775. This exceptional quality pair of figures are heavily made and stand mounted on scroll work bases portraying a man holding a large cockerel and a plate of food and a lady holding a pheasant by its legs. Both are dressed in period costume and both wear hats applied with raised feathers. The figures are very finely hand painted with wonderful detail and patterning in typical Meissen style and quality and both have blue underglaze crossed sword marks to the bases along with impressed and painted number marks. Provenance: Acquired from the UK art market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use.

In 1736, the porcelain manufactory produced the "Swan Service...
