About the Item

Rare oversized "White Ironstone" lidded soup tureen with appropriate and matching base plate. Hard to come by; this three piece "combo" due to it's age and large size and the likelihood of it being mishandled, or separated, either in use or transit; Dimensions: 17" long x 11 1/2" wide x 12" high The three pieces are in excellent and all original condition with no chips, or scratches, or restoration of any kind; quite extraordinary; there is some "use" wear to the underneath of the platter and to one end (see images); albeit the bowl and the lid are quite beautiful and maintain their original and shiny surface throughout. There is a slight blemish here and there in the field (see images). The markings on the underneath of the bowl display "Ironstone China" "William Adams" "Tunstall" with the coat of arms; a rampant lion to the left facing a rampant horse to the right. The platter marking is very similar with the coat of arms being almost identical "Ironstone China" along with "J.F." presumably the "Jacob Furnival Company Co." of Cobridge, England near Stoke on Trent. A study of the markings and English ceramics and ironstone makers would conclude that the proximity of these two companies (Cobridge and Tunstall being two miles apart); in conjunction with strikingly similar coat of arms logo; that one company purchased the other, or at the very least the rights or patent to the design; or that the production was a collaborative effort. The timing is also relevant; Jacob Furnival in business from 1845-1870; and Adams started in the pottery business in 1670 (in Tunstall from 1769) and thrived until the mid 20th century when they were purechased by Wedgewood. The fern and long sweeping leaf pattern in raised relief is present on all three pieces; and a patent taken out in 1850 by Furnival closely resembles this design. Nevertheless, the stature of this ensemble is beautiful, robust, and compelling as a centerpiece to a large dining table, and additionally can readily by utilized as a serving piece; a pre-made molded hole is present in the lid to accommodate a ladle. I actually have the original ladle (which is kind of super rare), but because there is slight damage to the "scoop" on the edge I have not included it with the listing but will, of course, ship along as well (image available upon request). It also has similar color and raised relief marking to the handle and seems original to the ensemble. Provenance: From my own collection for at least 45 years Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been dealing in fine quality decorative arts, furniture, jewelry, and paintings for more than 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.

Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
Located in Incline Village, NV
The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time. These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva! Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...
