About the Item

This pair of Derby porcelain plates was hand painted, showing beautiful summer flowers in bright polychrome enamels. They were painted by eminent Derby flower painter Leonard Lead circa 1825. He used an exceptionally bright palette of pinks and yellows contrasting with purples and orange. Adding to their beauty, the plates have brightly gilded rims applied in a delicate dentil pattern. The underside of both dishes has the Derby crown mark above "D" in iron red. The plates would look fantastic displayed in a cabinet or on a low table in a living room. They measure 10.25" in diameter and 1.2" in height Condition: Excellent Price: $380 Reference: to see a similar example of Derby Porcelain painted by Leonard Lead, see: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England Museum number: 3037-1901 Ceramics, Room 139, The Curtain Foundation Gallery, case 14, shelf 5. Background of Derby Porcelain: The early production of Derby porcelain dates to the mid-18th century. In 1756 William Duesbury joined Andrew Planche and John Heath to create the Nottingham Road factory, which later became Royal Crown Derby when King George III awarded Duesbury the rare honor of being allowed to incorporate His Majesty's Crown into the Derby back stamp. Ever since then, the company has been known as Royal Crown Derby.
