About the Item

A significant pair of French Sèvres style porcelain and gilt bronze covered vases. Each vase is of baluster form with a domed cover surmounted by a knop finial, raised on a conforming fluted socle and gilt bronze square plinth base. The porcelain bodies are decorated in spiraling panels alternating between cobalt blue and white reserves. The blue-ground panels are enriched with gilt foliate sprays, while the white-ground panels are hand-painted with vertical garlands of roses, forget-me-nots, and other small garden flowers. The spiral twist of the body continues into the covers, where the pattern is repeated with alternating bands of painted flowers and gilt ornament. The covers fit neatly into the necks, which are slightly everted and finished with a narrow gilt rim. The footed socles are similarly decorated with alternating floral and gilt-striped bands, echoing the design of the central bodies. Each porcelain socle is mounted with a gilt bronze laurel-cast collar that rests upon a square gilt bronze base, detailed with guilloche and pierced apron work. The mounts are well-chased and gilded, complementing the porcelain decoration. These vases are produced in the French Sèvres style, inspired by the output of the Sèvres manufactory in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The combination of deep cobalt grounds, gilt embellishments, and polychrome floral painting is a characteristic feature of Sèvres porcelain. The present examples follow this tradition and are mounted with gilt bronze bases, a practice widely used in French decorative arts to integrate porcelain into luxury furnishings.
