About the Item
Pair of centerpieces. Glazed porcelain, wood, textile, etc. Meissen, Germany, possibly the second half of the 19th century, modeled after Acier.
With markings at the base. They have hairs and defects; defects at the bases.
Two elaborate glazed porcelain figures each stand on a circular carved wooden base decorated with neoclassical elements and upholstered in red, raised on three spheres. Protecting the centerpieces are two clear glass bells, likely blown from the bubbles visible at the top. The marks on the base (blue) of both centerpieces are those used by Meissen between 1815 and 1924. They also feature other incised elements. The piece featuring three gallant couples around a tree is based on a model dated 1772 by Michael Victor Acier (1736, Versailles–from 1799), who worked in Meissen from 1762 and is often referred to as "Gardeners around a Tree." The one with the two musicians and two pairs of dancers around a tree is based on another model by Acier dated the same year. In both cases, examples based on these 18th-century works were produced throughout the 19th century, with particular popularity in the second half, varying in color and small details. ·
