About the Item

Pair of Meissen Porcelain “Day and Night” Figures This finely modeled pair of Meissen porcelain figures represents the allegorical subjects of Day and Night. Each figure stands on a shaped, gilded 24k gold and scroll-molded base with pale turquoise and white enamel details. The figure of Day holds a flaming torch and a garland of flowers, draped in a soft pink robe beside a large sunflower, symbolizing the rising sun. The figure of Night is shown with a dark blue cloak adorned with golden stars, holding a poppy flower and accompanied by an owl perched beside her feet, representing sleep and darkness. Both are depicted with cherubic features, delicately hand-painted faces, and gilded accents enhancing their hair and garments. Meissen, established in 1710 under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, was the first European manufacturer to produce true hard-paste porcelain. Each figure in this pair displays the precision and quality for which Meissen is renowned, evident in the crisp modeling of the limbs, folds of the drapery, and lifelike expressions. The surfaces are covered in a glossy glaze that enhances the vibrancy of the colors and maintains the integrity of the hand-painted details. The bases bear the underglaze blue crossed swords mark of Meissen, a symbol of authenticity and quality control. The theme of Day and Night originates from classical mythology, representing the cyclical passage of time and the balance of light and darkness. Day, with her torch and sunflower, embodies renewal and illumination, while Night, with her starry mantle and owl, signifies rest and reflection. Together, they form a complete allegory of duality and harmony. These figures are well preserved and exemplify Meissen’s commitment to technical excellence and symbolic design, suitable for both collectors and connoisseurs of fine European porcelain.
