About the Item

Faux Cuisine: Fornasetti's "Corfam a La Du Pont", Piero Fornasetti and the Plastic Bird This brilliantly satirical porcelain plate, "Corfam a La Du Pont," is one of the most conceptually unique designs from the collectible "Cook Plates" series (1967-1974) commissioned by Fleming Joffe. Designed by the celebrated Italian artist Piero Fornasetti, the plate serves as a witty, meta-commentary on the leather goods trade and the dawn of synthetic materials. The plate features a surreal illustration of an exotic bird—the fictional "Corfam bird"—rendered in Fornasetti’s signature graphic style of black transfer-print, gilt, and bold orange accents. The surrounding text, the "Corfam a La Du Pont" recipe, describes the preparation of the bird, which is an allegorical stand-in for Corfam, DuPont's ill-fated poromeric imitation leather, introduced in 1963. The recipe is a masterpiece of irony: it instructs the cook to capture the bird, stew it, stuff it with mangoes, papayas and oranges, then finally to "bake and baste until a golden brown. Glorious." The humor lies in Fornasetti's recognition that Corfam, a synthetic material, had become a "prize animal" in the leather industry, fit for a fanciful, and impossible, recipe. Historical Context: The Battle of the Hides This plate is a pivotal piece of 20th-century design history, capturing the tension between traditional leather (Fleming Joffe's product) and the emerging technology of synthetic "poromeric" materials like DuPont's Corfam. By commissioning Fornasetti to create a satirical recipe for the competition's product, Fleming Joffe transformed a corporate giveaway into a cultural talking point. This move was consistent with the company’s ingenious use of high art for marketing; they were also famous for collaborating with: Andy Warhol, who produced ads and decorated their showrooms. Ogden Nash, who paired his light verse with Warhol's drawings. The "Cook Plates" were given as exclusive New Year's gifts to the company’s top clientele, confirming Fornasetti’s observation that each of the fourteen plates featured a "decidedly improbable recipe." The reverse is marked: "FLEMING JOFFE LTD./COOK PLATES/ESPECIALLY MADE BY/ [Fornasetti mark] Milano/Made in Italy." Artist: Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) Design: Corfam a La Du Pont Patron: Fleming Joffe Company, New York Subject: Satire on DuPont's synthetic leather, Corfam Medium: Porcelain with Transfer Print and Gilding Period: 1967–1974 Diameter: 10 1/4 inches (26.04 cm) Provenance: Collection of Gail Feingarten Oppenheimer. This plate is not just a decorative object; it is a witty time capsule of art, commerce, and the technological rivalry that defined the 1960s. (Ref: NY9850-B-icl))
