About the Item

Piero Fornasetti Porcelain Hot Air Balloon Plate, Mongolfiere Pattern, Rosenthal, Motiv 1, 1980s The Piero Fornasetti porcelain plate was made by Rosenthal and depicts a scene of a historical hot air balloon. The pattern is known as the Mongolfiere pattern. The plate depicts a hot air balloon with a hanging basket with two men. A panel reads as follows" 1784/ Aerostato Dell'Accademia Di Digione/Con a Bordo Guitton E Bertrand." This was the first flight where oars were used to assist with steering. "Mongolfiere" in Italian means "hot-air balloon," referencing the invention of the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne, who pioneered the first practical hot air balloon in 1783. Mark: Circular black-ground mark with yellow writing. Rosenthal Classic/Germany above the Fornasetti brush and hand and below Fornasetti (registration mark) and Dekor Mongolfiere with Motiv 1. Dimensions: Diameter 10 1/2 inches x 1 inch height In the 1980s, Rosenthal revived Piero Fornasetti's reputation by applying a small number of his designs, particularly those featuring the face of Lina Cavalieri, to their products, notably in the "Tema e Variazioni" (theme and variation) series of plates. See: Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, Barnaba Fornasetti, Page 616, #167 for four Fornasetti examples from set. (Ref: NY10746-irr)
