About the Item

Elegant and refined, this small porcelain jug is a rare 18th-century piece, made for the European market by Chinese manufacturers working for the East India Company. It is distinguished by its delicate decoration of flowers and floral garlands, hand-painted in a soft and harmonious palette, typical of the Rococo style popular in Europe at the time. The finely molded spout, the curved grip of the lid, and the balanced curves of the body demonstrate great craftsmanship. With its small size, this so-called "egoist" jug was designed for a single person, reflecting the private use of tea, then a luxury and refined beverage. The French East India Company, founded in 1664 under the leadership of Colbert, minister of Louis XIV, was tasked with competing with European trading powers in maritime trade with Asia. It imported precious products such as spices, silks, tea, and especially Chinese porcelain, highly prized by European elites. These porcelains were often made to order, according to Western tastes, giving rise to a unique hybrid style called "India Company," where the East interprets the West. This jug is an emblematic example. Provenance: Private collection
