About the Item

Excellent piece from the Meissen manufactory from the 19th century: Porcelain cup and saucer with exquisite overglaze painting and lavish gold decoration: Cylindrical cup with flared rim above pearl band relief, large rectangular reserve on the front with polychrome image motif: View of Dresden from the right bank of the Elbe below the Augustus Bridge, framed by a glossy and matt gold border, with a gold arched frieze running around the back of the cup in line with the upper edge of the picture frame, featuring delicate overlapping garlands painted in gold and silver grey, inside of the cup fully gilded, raised volute handle with acanthus leaf onlay and leaf motif at the lower connection, as well as gilding on the outside. Saucer with flat, smooth mirror and slightly outwardly curved rim, wide gold edge with inwardly adjoining arched frieze decoration, delicate garlands in gold and silver grey intersecting each other from the tips, as on the cup, gilded pearl band relief in the coving to the mirror, flanked by two silver bands, delicately painted rosette in the centre of the mirror. 'Dresden from the right bank of the Elbe below the Augustus Bridge' is an oil painting by Bernardo Bellotto, known as Canaletto, which he painted in Dresden in 1748. It is located in the Old Masters Picture Gallery and is listed in the gallery catalogue under gallery number 606. The view depicted is world-famous as a Canaletto view.
