About the Item

Depiction of two seated, smiling Chinese Buddha figures from a series of folk types: Voluminous bodies with hair tied back strictly, wearing robes that cling closely to the body, belted below the chest, patterned with Indian floral decorations, with wide sleeves falling over one shoulder and exposing it, and gold-trimmed ruffs, as well as pink or yellow slippers, sitting with legs crossed and arms held straight in front of them. Movable head, tongue and hands, removable head with metal weight, elaborate coloured flower painting and gold decoration. The Meissen manufactory's fondness for Chinese art is particularly evident in its extraordinary porcelain figurines of seated Chinese figures. 'At the request of Frederick II of Prussia, the manufactory created '10 Bajoden with wobbly heads, each 1 foot high' in late autumn 1762. Five of these wobbly pagodas were shaped as women and five as men. After the end of the war and the completion of the interior decoration of the Chinese house at Sanssouci, they were placed on consoles, where six examples still remain today. When the French windows of this round summer dining room are open, the figures' moving hands, heads and tongues seem to come from another world.' (Ulrich Pietsch, Claudia Panz, Cat. Triumph of the Blue Swords, Meissen Porcelain for the Nobility and Bourgeoisie 1710-1815, 2010, Leipzig, page 144) Design: JOHANN JOACHIM KÄNDLER (1706 - 1775) was chief sculptor at the Meissen manufactory from 1742 to 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer) , Gallant Figurines, etc. Kaendler designed models 2883 + 2884 in 1730 Manufactory: Meissen Germany Dating: Made circa 1840 Material: Porcelain, glossy finish Technique: Handmade and painted porcelain Dimensions: Height: 32,0 cm / 12.59 in Width: 32,0 cm / 12.59 in Depth: 32,0 cm / 12.59 in Marked: Meissen blue crossed sword mark pommels on hilts / First quality Model numbers: 2883 + 2884 Bibliography: Thomas Sabine Bergmann, Meissen Artist's - Figures / Erlangen Germany 2017, Model numbers 1 - 3000, catalogue numbers 1619 on page 271 and 1621 on page 272.
