About the Item

Under Construction: Fornasetti's Enigmatic Themes Variations Plate, No. 200 Immerse yourself in the playful genius of Piero Fornasetti with this iconic porcelain plate, Number 200 from the renowned Themes Variations (Tema e Variazioni) series, produced in the 1990s. This particular variation, often called "The Statue," showcases the quintessential elements of Fornasetti's surrealist wit and graphic mastery. Dimensions: 10 inch diameter x 11/2 inch height The striking image features a massive neoclassical bust of a woman, set upon a plinth, with its serene, blank-eyed face surrounded by a finely detailed, temporary structure of wooden scaffolding, a ladder, and a pulley system. This juxtaposition of a classical statue and modern construction elements transforms the plate into a meditation on beauty, creation, and the process of art itself. The plate comes complete with its original white box. Historical Context: The Muse of Lina Cavalieri The Themes Variations series is Piero Fornasetti's (1913-1988) most famous and enduring body of work. It is a visual testament to his belief that "a single product never exhausted the possibilities of an idea." His working method was based on allowing his imagination to freely roam, creating endless layers of meaning around a single motif. The Enigmatic Face The face featured on this plate—and over 500 variations across the series—is that of the 19th-century Italian opera singer, Lina Cavalieri (1874-1944). Fornasetti discovered her image in a French magazine and was immediately captivated. He saw in her features not just a celebrity, but an "archetypal classic image, like a Greek statue, enigmatic like the Gioconda," making her the perfect blank canvas for his ceaseless creativity. This plate, Number 200, is a literal interpretation of Fornasetti's vision. By placing the "archetype" (Cavalieri's face) within scaffolding, he suggests that her image is both an antique work of art and a perpetually "under construction" idea—always being built upon, altered, and re-imagined. This masterful design, though created after Piero Fornasetti's death (he passed in 1988), continues the artistic legacy maintained by his son, Barnaba Fornasetti, using the original plates and drawings. The piece perfectly illustrates the core principle of the series: taking a familiar face and showing it, as if in a dream, as a mask, a clock, a moon, or in this case, a monumental statue being worked on.
