About the Item

Extraordinarily decorated porcelain cup with saucer: The entire height of the front of the cylindrical white cup is decorated with a scenic motif in polychrome after a play by William Shakespeare: 'Troilus and Cresside', a drama about the love of Troilus, the son of King Priam, for Cressida, the daughter of the priest Kalchas, depicting the three main protagonists in a bedchamber. The scene framed in gold, encompassing the entire front half of the cup, the back of the cup surrounded by golden, partially impasto decorative bands and garlands, a beige background with golden festoons with medallion and leaf decoration, as well as rows of pearls and vine leaves painted in green, an angular handle painted in gold in a J-shape with leaf and bracket ends, inscription on the underside. Saucer with high, raised rim and smooth mirror, beige background, rich gold decoration with green-painted elements, repeating the decoration on the back of the cup. Small golden medallion in the centre surrounded by vine leaf tendrils. A painting by the British painter Henry Tresham (1751-1814), 'Troilus and Cressida, Act 4, Scene II', after which an engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi RA (1728-1815, Italian) also exists, served as a template. Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal (1735 Nuremberg - 1805 Vienna) From 1784 until his death he headed the Viennese porcelain manufactory, which under his leadership enjoyed great economic and artistic growth ('painterly period'). Sorgenthal was also the chief official for the state manufacturing system.
