About the Item
This statement piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, hand-built from porcelain slabs in Brooklyn, then fired in a traditional Japanese-style wood-burning Noborigama kiln in Cold Spring, NY. The firing process requires round the clock stoking over several days, plus several days just to cool, but the result is the serendipity of ash, minerals, and glaze chemicals melting and colliding at temperatures over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The vase is a wabi-sabi bullet shape, formed from three slabs, with a rough slab base, which was covered with crackled 24 karat gold leaf after the firing. The luster glaze melted into a gray-blue glass on the side of the vase that faced the fire in the kiln, while gravity created purple ash streaks around the exterior. On the cooler side is an earthy brown with spots where ashes landed on the body.
