About the Item
English Creamware Cow Creamer and Cover
Staffordshire, circa 1775–1780
Glazed earthenware
This whimsical yet functional vessel exemplifies the charm of 18th-century Staffordshire pottery. Molded in the form of a standing cow with a hollow body and open mouth, it served as a creamer—pouring milk or cream through the animal’s mouth. The cream-colored glaze is playfully speckled with naïve brown dots and dashes, lending a rustic character to its naturalistic form. Resting on a shaped green base, the piece reflects both the pastoral nostalgia and inventive spirit of English ceramic design during the Georgian era.
Creamers of this type were popularized by the burgeoning middle class, who sought novelty and refinement in their tableware. This piece reflects the influence of Dutch and German figural ceramics, while remaining distinctly English in its glaze and modeling. Collectors prize such examples for their historical resonance, tactile appeal, and the subtle individuality found in each hand-crafted detail.

Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent
- One of the most extensive public collections of cow creamers, including Staffordshire creamware examples from the mid-to-late 18th century.
- While many lack maker’s marks, the collection showcases stylistic variations—some with molded calves, floral bases, or Whieldon-type mottled glazes.
