About the Item

English Creamware "Tortoiseshell" Glaze Tea Caddy with French Silver Cover, Circa 1770 A fine 18th-century English creamware tea caddy (or canister), produced in Staffordshire circa 1770. This piece is an excellent example of "Whieldon-type" ware, celebrated for its distinctive tortoiseshell decoration. The rectangular body features canted corners and a tapered shoulder, covered in a rich, variegated glaze created by sponging metallic oxides (manganese brown, copper green, and cobalt blue) onto the cream body during firing. The result is a vibrant, marbled surface that mimics the expensive turtle shell material popular in the Georgian era. Unusually, this English ceramic body is fitted with a fine French silver cover (added circa 1800). The silver lid is elegantly engraved with a central flower head surrounded by a cross-hatched octagonal border and pendant motifs at the corners, showcasing a fascinating cross-channel history. Markings: Silver Mark: The cover bears French silver hallmarks from Paris (dating to the period prior to 1804), indicating it was likely fitted by a French owner or retailer shortly after the turn of the 19th century. Ceramic: Unmarked (typical of Whieldon/Staffordshire creamware of this period). Condition: Excellent antique condition. The glaze is glossy and well-defined. The silver cover fits securely. No chips, cracks, or restoration. Measurements: Total Height (with cover): 5 inches (12.7 cm) Height (Ceramic only): 4 3/4 inches (12.1 cm) Width: 3 1/4 inches (8.3 cm) Depth: 2 3/4 inches (7.0 cm) Historical Context: "Whieldon ware" refers to a class of mid-18th-century lead-glazed earthenwares developed by Thomas Whieldon (often in partnership with the young Josiah Wedgwood). The "tortoiseshell" effect was achieved by applying metal oxides directly to the biscuit body under a clear lead glaze. The presence of a French silver mount suggests this piece traveled to the Continent, where English creamware ("faïence fine") was highly fashionable among the aristocracy before and after the Revolution.
