About the Item

Rural Charm: Whieldon-Type Creamware Cow Creamer Whieldon-Type Creamware Cow Creamer and Cover Circa 1770 This delightful and historically important piece is an 18th-century cow creamer executed in Whieldon-type creamware. Cow creamers became immensely popular in England during this period, serving as whimsical, figurative vessels for pouring milk or cream at the tea table. Decoration and Design The cow creamer stands firmly on a rectangular base featuring a subtle fluted edge. The vessel follows a realistic bovine form, with the milk or cream poured from the mouth and the looped tail serving as the handle. A small aperture on the cow's back allows the vessel to be filled and is sealed by its original cover. Whieldon Coloring: The creamer is distinctively decorated using the sponging or "splashed" technique associated with the Staffordshire potters, particularly Thomas Whieldon (1719–1795). The glazes are applied to mimic a tortoiseshell effect, featuring appealing, variegated patches of brown, manganese, and green oxides over a pale creamware body. Function: The form, while whimsical, is entirely functional: the liquid is introduced through the opening on the back (covered by the lid) and dispensed through the spout (the cow's mouth), with the upturned tail forming a comfortable handle. Historical Context: The Whieldon Period and Cow Creamers Thomas Whieldon: Operating in Staffordshire, Thomas Whieldon was one of the most inventive and commercially successful potters of the mid-18th century. He is best known for developing colored glazes and creative molded forms, including figures and novelties. Although many potters produced pieces in this style, the term "Whieldon-type" is used for pieces exhibiting his characteristic tortoiseshell glazes and colors. The Cow Creamer Craze: The cow creamer emerged around the 1750s and quickly became a favorite novelty item. Its popularity was fueled by the 18th-century enthusiasm for tea drinking and the contemporary shift toward naturalistic and rustic motifs in decorative arts. The Staffordshire potteries, including Whieldon and later Wedgwood, produced a vast array of these whimsical figures. This piece, with its original cover and attractive sponged decoration, is a charming example of Georgian-era ceramic folk art. Dimensions: 4 3/4 inches high x 5 1/2 inches wide x 1 3/4 inches deep (12.07 cm high x 13.97 cm wide x 4.45 cm deep). Provenance: British Private Collection; D.M. P. Manheim, NYC (paper label).
