About the Item

"Peace, Plenty and Independence" - An Exceptional American Market Creamware Jug, Circa 1800 A profound piece of early American history and decorative art, this large Liverpool Creamware jug was specifically produced for the burgeoning United States market around 1800. This spectacular jug perfectly encapsulates the patriotic zeal and domestic aspirations of the post-Revolutionary era. Its historical significance is coupled with its personalized inscription. The Jug This handsome, transfer-decorated creamware jug stands as a powerful symbol of the young republic's foundational ideals. Its sturdy, baluster-form body is enhanced with crisp black transfer-prints, capturing the spirit and aspirations of its intended audience. The Decoration • The Patriotic Side: "Peace, Plenty and Independence" The centerpiece is an imposing spread-wing American eagle perched atop a cannon. Below, a central medallion proudly proclaims: "PEACE. PLENTY. AND INDEPENDENCE." This tableau is flanked by two allegorical figures: Plenty, holding a overflowing cornucopia, and Peace, torching the instruments of war. This imagery powerfully celebrates the nation's hard-won military independence and hope for future prosperity. • The Agricultural Side: "The Farmers Arms" The reverse side features the highly popular "THE FARMERS ARMS" motif, celebrating the agrarian backbone of the nation. It depicts a farming couple standing alongside a shield quartered with agricultural symbols, all under the motto "GOD IS OUR TRUST." Personalization and Sentiment Unusually, this jug is personalized, indicating it was likely a special commission or wedding gift. Below the spout, a wreath encircles the inscription: "SAMUEL RACHEL HAYNES." Below this, four lines of verse capture a timeless sentiment of devotion and commitment: • "My love is Fix'd, • I cannot range, • I like my choice, • Too well to change." Dimensions 10 1/8 inch height x 9 inches wide x 6 1/4 inches deep (25.72cm high x 22.86cm wide x 15.88cm deep). ________________________________________ Detailed References for Comparison and Scholarship This specific decorative pattern is a well-documented and important subject in the field of Anglo-American ceramics. Masons Ironstone Jug or Pitcher in rare Cashmire Ptn, William 1Vth Ca 1833
By Mason s Ironstone
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good, Mason's ironstone hydra jug with a snake handle in the Cashmire De Thibet pattern dating to the William 1Vth English 19th century period, circa 1832-1836 The jug has an octagonal hydra shape with a snake handle. This pattern is not often seen. It is called "Cashmire De Thibet" and is illustrated on page 60 of the book; A Guide To Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The jug is unmarked to the base as was sometimes the case, but is definitely by Mason's Ironstone as they were the only manufacturer to produce a jug in this shape with this pattern and dating to the English William 1Vth period circa 1832-1836. Overall a very nice Masons Hydra Jug or Pitcher in a rare pattern. Notes on the pattern. This unusual name of "Cashmire De Thibet" was a name applied circa 1832-1836, to summer scarves...
