About the Item
A somewhat rare and unusual arts and crafts terracotta lidded box in a beautiful matte “Grueby” like green glaze featuring gnomes, grotesques and ghouls supporting the box. Made by the Atlantic Terracotta Company. There are some pan figure heads on the sides. Impressed numbers to the bottom of the lid. The Atlantic Terracotta company is famed for its many public works.
From Wikipedia:
Some of the company's most notable projects include the Flatiron Building (1901), the Woolworth Building (1910), the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1928), and the United States Supreme Court (1932).
Additionally, the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company and its predecessors contributed significantly to the architecture of Perth Amboy, which features a total of 111 structures with terra cotta detailing or facades.
