About the Item

Staffordshire Blue and White Pearlware Chinoiserie Coffee Pot Circa 1785 This elegant and well-proportioned coffee pot is a superb example of late Georgian ceramic production from the Staffordshire potteries. Standing at an impressive height, its graceful, tapering form is decorated in a rich underglaze blue with a classic Chinoiserie scene, featuring pavilions and pagodas nestled within a romantic, imaginary landscape. The piece is a testament to the technical innovation and commercial acumen that made Staffordshire the center of the global ceramics trade in the late 18th century. The coffee pot is made of Pearlware, a significant ceramic innovation perfected by Josiah Wedgwood around 1775. Pearlware is a type of refined white earthenware with a small amount of cobalt added to the clear glaze. This process neutralized the yellowish tint of earlier creamware, resulting in a whiter, slightly blue-toned body that was the perfect canvas for blue and white decoration. It was an affordable and durable alternative to expensive Chinese porcelain, allowing the rapidly growing British middle class to participate in the fashionable rituals of coffee and tea drinking. By the 1780s, the whimsical Rococo Chinoiserie of the mid-century had evolved into more standardized, picturesque landscape patterns, heavily inspired by the blue and white porcelain still being imported from China. This coffee pot captures that aesthetic perfectly, blending a distinctly English form with a decorative style that evoked the exoticism of the Far East. Its history is further distinguished by its provenance, having once been part of the esteemed Laver Collection of English Pottery, a mark of its quality and importance. English Pearlware Coffee Pot, Blue Transferware, Fallow Deer in Snow, 1800-1820
Located in London, GB
This is a superb coffee pot made in England between 1800 and 1825. The pot is made of pearlware and has a very charming blue transfer printed pattern of fallow deer in a snowy landscape with farm buildings. This transfer print looks like an early 19thC print; as we couldn't identify the maker it was impossible to date it exactly. A charming detail is that the rim of the cover and the footrim, which are printed with a row of houses, both are printed up side down; this was probably done by children, who often did the smaller transfer prints because their little fingers could handle the thin strips of paper better than adults. The coffeepot is unmarked. There is an old shop label on the underside stating it is "English, probably Spode" - however, although this pot is certainly English, it is certainly not Spode. CONDITION REPORT The coffee pot is in good antique and usable condition without any damage to the pot or the spout; there are just some chips off the lower rim of the cover, which are not visible when in position and are inconsequential for using the pot. As is normal for antique pearlware...
