About the Item

French Art Deco Stoneware Pitcher by Denert Balichon (Denbac), Vierzon, France, ca. 1920. This elegant French Art Deco stoneware pitcher was crafted around 1920 by Denert Balichon, the renowned Vierzon ceramic workshop better known as Denbac. The piece features a refined silhouette and an upper frieze decorated with four stylized roosters, a classic Art Deco motif. Its subtle flamed glaze—rich in depth, texture, and iridescent tonal variations—exemplifies the iconic Denbac flamed stoneware technique. Dimensions: • Height: 5.5 in. (14 cm) • Width: 7.1 in. (18 cm) • Depth: 5.1 in. (13 cm) Signed “Denbac” on the underside. About Denbac (Denert Balichon) Founded in 1909 by René Denert (1872–1937) and joined in 1910 by René-Louis Balichon, Denbac became celebrated for its innovative high-temperature flamed stoneware with metallic and iridescent effects. Their stoneware—fired between 1250°C and 1350°C—results in vitrified, waterproof, and exceptionally durable pieces. Denbac’s signature aesthetic derives from experimental glazes combining multiple enamels to produce dramatic color shifts, drips, and crystallizations. Because the glazes react uniquely to variations in thickness, temperature, and kiln atmosphere, every Denbac flamed stoneware piece is one-of-a-kind. Denbac produced a wide range of vases, pitchers, and sculptural decorative objects, transitioning from early Art Nouveau influences to the bold geometric lines of the French Art Deco movement in the 1920s. This pitcher embodies that evolution, offering both modernist style and artisanal craftsmanship. After Denert’s death in 1937, Balichon continued the workshop’s activity, but production ultimately ceased during World War II. Today, Denbac ceramics remain highly sought-after by collectors of French Art Deco ceramics, studio pottery, and flamed stoneware.
