About the Item

This rare Spode drabware rectangular tray was made for slices of bread or small breakfast rolls. Made in England by Spode circa 1825, it has a deep, rich color. The carrying handle is perfectly intact. The underside of the tray has a previous dealer's sticker price of $2,900. Dimensions: 7.75" x 6.5", the handle 4" in height, Condition: Very Good with a small glaze pop (see images) Marks: the underside of the basket has the impressed Spode mark of the period Price: $400 Background of Drabware: Wedgwood and Spode introduced drabware in England in the early 19th century. Unlike other colored earthenwares, which have a white body painted in various colors or tinted with colored glazes, drabware is made from dark clay, resulting in its deep, rich color. Because drabware is made with naturally colored clays, there are slight variations in color from piece to piece. The gold trim adds a subtle glow.
