About the Item

Naturalism in Clay: The Creamware Cauliflower Coffee Pot Object: Coffee Pot and Cover Origin: Staffordshire, England (Likely Thomas Whieldon or Josiah Wedgwood's early designs) Date: Circa 1760-1770 Medium: Lead-Glazed Earthenware (Creamware), Molded and Enameled Dimensions: 10 1/2 inches high x 8 inches wide x 5 inches deep (26.67 cm high x 20.32 cm wide x 12.7 cm deep). The Rococo Obsession with Nature This charming lead-glazed earthenware coffee pot is a quintessential example of English Creamware from the mid-18th century, a period when Naturalism was the dominant theme in decorative arts. Staffordshire potters, driven by competitive innovation, perfected a technique of molding refined earthenware to mimic the appearance and texture of flora and fauna, known as agates, tortoiseshells, and, as seen here, vegetable forms. The coffee pot features a pear-shaped body expertly molded to resemble a cauliflower. The lower half and curved spout are rendered as large, overlapping green-glazed leaves, while the upper body and the domed cover are molded with textured white florets. The entire body is coated in a clear lead glaze. The natural color of the refined earthenware produces the yellowish-white cast seen on the florets, while the vibrant green of the leaves comes from the application of copper oxide to the surface. Historical Context and Function Objects like this were highly fashionable for the elegant tea and coffee services of the Georgian elite. The style originated as an inventive, more affordable alternative to expensive imported porcelain, demonstrating the technical ingenuity of English potters. This specific cauliflower model was produced by several of the most influential Staffordshire workshops, often associated with innovations by leading figures like Josiah Wedgwood or Thomas Whieldon. The design is a direct embodiment of the era's fascination with botany and the domestic garden, bringing the wonders of the natural world directly to the fashionable dining table. The survival of this complete piece, including the floret knop and notched scroll handle, makes it a valuable artifact from the period. Reference Colonial Williamsburg: An identical example is held in their collection (Object number 2005-179,A&B), documenting the importance of naturalism in mid-18th century English ceramic wares.
