About the Item

Staffordshire Pearlware "Inlaid Agate" Teapot with Lion Finial, Circa 1780 This Staffordshire Pearlware Inlaid Agate Teapot and Cover with Lion Finial, attributed to the Ralph Wood Family and dating to approximately 1780, stands as a superb example of inventive 18th-century English pottery decoration. The squat, oval-bodied teapot showcases the distinctive, visually complex surface known as "inlaid agate" or "surface agate" decoration. The body and cover are meticulously adorned with this rare technique, which achieves a rich, variegated, and tessellated effect—resembling fragmented stones or minerals—created by mixing different colored clays or slips. Design and Technique A charming recumbent lion serves as the finial, resting on a circular reeded base atop the patterned lid. This patterned mid-section is framed by a decorative border around the shoulder, featuring small geometric or checked motifs, and a lower border of finely molded reeding (fluting). The plain, white pearlware spout, designed in two sections, and the plain loop handle with molded acanthus leaf terminals provide a striking white contrast that further accentuates the complexity of the body's decoration. The teapot measures 3 7/8 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 4 1/2 inches deep. Note that the teapot has an invisible chip to the cover that has been professionally repaired. Historical Context and Attribution Though this specific piece is unmarked, it is strongly attributed to the influential Ralph Wood Family workshop in Burslem, Staffordshire. This connection is supported by the existence of a similar teapot known to bear the impressed mark "R A Wood, Burslem." This type of decoration has been historically known by several names, reflecting its varied appearance and the competitive nature of Staffordshire potting. Documentation suggests this surface was possibly the material referred to as "Terra Tersia" in a 1794 auction notice for the contents of Ralph Wedgwood's London warehouse, with other period terms including tessellated, granite, and mosaic. The form and decoration are consistent with documented examples of this rare decorative type. Jonathan Rickard, in Mocha and Related dipped wares, 1770-1939 (page 30, Fig 41), illustrates a very similar teapot, differing only in its spaniel dog finial and lack of a molded spout. Furthermore, the publication An English Pottery Heritage, Part Two, The Troy Dawson Chappell Collection of Earthenware Stoneware 1630-1800 (Page 837, # 375) features a coffee pot with this identical decoration. This teapot, with its elegant form and exceptionally rare "inlaid agate" surface, represents a pinnacle of decorative achievement in late 18th-century English pottery. (Ref: NY10355-uamx)
