About the Item
Set of Six English Creamware Soup Plates,
Circa 1800-1830
This is a refined set of six English Creamware soup plates, dating from the early 19th century. Each plate features a classic, plain design with a deep central bowl, making them ideal for serving soups or stews. The rim is elegantly detailed with a molded "bar and circle" pattern, adding subtle texture and visual interest to the otherwise minimalist form. Creamware, known for its smooth, pale yellow or cream-colored glaze, was a highly popular and versatile ceramic during this period, offering a more refined alternative to earlier earthenware.
Dimensions: 8 1/4 inches in diameter x 1 inch high.
Mark: Impressed with "PBO/11" on the reverse.
Condition: One plate has a long crack and is considered a decorative piece. The remaining five plates are fully usable. One plate has a small chip on the corner on the reverse side, which is not visible from the front.

Historical Context: The Rise of English Creamware
This set of soup plates belongs to a significant period in the history of English ceramics. Creamware, developed in the mid-18th century by master potters like Josiah Wedgwood, revolutionized the pottery industry. Its smooth, durable body and light, elegant glaze made it a highly sought-after alternative to both expensive porcelain and coarse stoneware. It was a favorite of Queen Charlotte, who ordered a service from Wedgwood, leading to its popular name, "Queen's Ware."
By the early 19th century, Creamware had become a staple in both wealthy households and a burgeoning middle class, as its production was industrialized, making it more affordable than hand-painted porcelain from the Far East. The impressed mark "PBO/11" suggests a particular manufacturer, though a definitive attribution can not be made at this time. The simple, molded design of the rim reflects the taste of the era, which favored clean lines and understated ornamentation.
These plates would have been part of a larger dinner service, a testament to the growing importance of formal dining in the post-Georgian and Regency eras. Despite their age, their enduring design and subtle elegance continue to be appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts of early English ceramics.
