About the Item

Verdant Elegance: Brameld's Green-Glazed Leaf Dishes (c. 1815-42) This captivating pair of large, leaf-shaped molded dishes, distinguished by their rich green glaze and naturalistic detailing, represents the craftsmanship of the Brameld family's pottery at the Swinton works in Yorkshire. Historical Context These dishes were created during the period when the Brameld family operated the factory in Swinton, Yorkshire (c. 1806-1842). The Bramelds had a significant presence in Yorkshire's pottery industry, with interests in Swinton, Don, and Mexborough. Their connection to the renowned Leeds Pottery was particularly close, including a temporary merger from approximately 1785 to 1806. After disentangling from other ventures around 1806, they focused on the Swinton Pottery until its eventual closure in 1842. The factory received strong patronage from their landlord, Earl Fitzwilliam, and in 1826, it was renamed The Rockingham Works in honor of the Earl's uncle, the Marquis of Rockingham. Under the Bramelds' direction, the factory became celebrated for producing an astonishing variety of earthenware and stoneware, encompassing many popular decorative styles, including these vividly modeled, nature-inspired pieces. This pair of leaf dishes showcases the factory's skill in creating intricate, molded earthenware with a vibrant, appealing glaze—a testament to the high-quality domestic wares produced during the Rockingham-era of the factory.
