About the Item

Purple Bloom: Hand-Painted English Pearlware Botanical Plates Object: Pair of Hand-Painted Dinner/Dessert Plates Origin: English Potteries (Staffordshire region) Date: Circa 1840 Medium: Pearlware Earthenware, Hand-Painted Enamels Mark: Impressed Five-Leaf Clover Dimensions: 8 inch diameter x 1 inch high (20.32 cm x 2.54 cm). A Folky Display of Victorian Botany This charming pair of scalloped-rim plates showcases the enduring appeal of hand-painted pearlware in early Victorian England. Each plate is dominated by a large, boldly stylized purple flower—likely a rendition of a daisy or chrysanthemum—with a bright yellow center, set against deep green leaves and stems. The decorative border features a striking blue band punctuated by small, closed pink and black flower heads, framing the central design. The aesthetic, characterized by its spontaneous, unrestrained brushwork and vibrant color palette, firmly places this piece in the realm of folk art pottery. Unlike the intricate, factory-standardized transfer-printed wares of the era, these hand-painted pieces possess a unique, naive quality, reflecting the individual skill and artistic freedom of the decorator. They were designed to bring color and cheer to the domestic setting. Historical Context: Pearlware and the Folk Tradition Dating to around 1840, these plates were made using the pearlware body, a refined earthenware developed in the late 18th century by Josiah Wedgwood. Pearlware was a popular, affordable substitute for expensive porcelain, known for its whiter body and a glaze tinged blue by the addition of cobalt. The impressed five-leaf clover mark suggests manufacture by a smaller, though prolific, Staffordshire factory. This design belongs to a tradition of inexpensive, polychrome painted wares that flourished in the industrial potteries, often distributed to the working and middle classes both domestically and via export markets. Today, these folk-painted pieces are highly valued by collectors for their striking colors and authentic, unpretentious charm.
