About the Item
Gorgeous green glazed ceramic jar from the south of France near Biot
With a beautiful lead sulfide glaze, it achieves various shades of green and shadows on the surface of the jug.
A beautiful, wide handle with grooved lines frames this beautiful hand-made piece.
From the 16th century Biot built its reputation thanks to the manufacture and export of jars. This reputation grew in the 19th century with the production of a wide variety of table fountains.
Thanks to the clayey soils of the Brague basin, Biot and Vallauris became centers of pottery manufacturing. The soil, mainly taken from the district of Vaugrenier (gray earth) and Clausonnes (red earth) was of great plastic quality. These same periods, in the south of France, many potters also developed traditional pottery products waterproofed by a varnish composed of lead sulphide called alquifoux. The technique of salt-varnished stoneware is also used, notably in Normandy and Alsace.
Long practiced within the status of the object and its use, potters experimenting with techniques and mastery of materials
